London

London’s symbol, Big Ben by Night

Tower Bridge, opened in 1894 is the most famous bridge in London

01 What is this place

London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom (UK). It is the UK's largest and most populous metropolitan area and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures.

02 Where is this place
London is located in the South East of England. It is situated on the River Thames.

03 Why do tourists visit this place
London has the greatest concentration of major attractions in Britain and boasts four World Heritage Sites. Over two hundred attractions are free to enter, so there’s nowhere else in the world where you can see so much for so little! You can choose from top attractions like the British Airways London Eye or the Tower of London, join a tour or perhaps relax in one of the capital’s beautiful parks and gardens.

It would be safe to say that London has more awesome museums than practically any other city on the planet. Experience the British Empire of the past (which covered one-fifth of the earth’s land surface) at the British Museum. For people with more varied interests, there’s the Tate Modern and Tate Britain art gallery, and the Natural History Museum, which contains a lot of “Epic Dino bones” which delight the six-year old in all of us.  Heading for Buckingham Palace, or simply stopping in at the local drinking establishments to mingle with the natives and knock back a pint or two.  You’ll walk the same streets where royalty has walked (or more likely, ridden) for centuries. You’ll shop in the same establishments frequented by celebrities and can treat yourself to Carnaby Street or Savile Row fashions. You can visit Westminster Abbey, where the monarch of England have been crowned since the days of William the Conqueror.

London is an ideal destination for honeymooners, retirees, students of history, and even families with kids. It is one of the world’s most diverse and culturally rich destinations, and no matter how many times you visit, you’ll always find new reasons to return!

London Underground

05 How do people travel in the the world's ninth-largest city?
Londoners travel by taking the subway. The London underground is the first underground railway system in the world, and, starting in 1890, it was also the first to operate electric trains. It consists of 287 tube stations. All 409 escalators do the equivalent of two round the world trips every week. Only one person was ever born in a tube carriage and her name is Thelma Ursula Beatrice Eleanor - check out her initials. She was born in 1924 on a Bakerloo line train at Elephant & Castle. Anthea Turner and her sister Wendy have written a series of children's books about mice living on the London Underground. An estimated half a million mice live in the Underground system so that should keep them both busy for a while.

06 Is London a tourist city?
Based on statistics alone, London attracts more than 15 million international visitors per year, making it the world's most visited city. The answer is yes.
